Through repetition and progression, line can be used to create a "visual cadence." In music, cadence or rhythm is defined as "the regular rise and fall of intensity in sounds." Translated to art, rhythm is created by the regular rise and fall of color and value, as well as the orchestration of optical tensions between the elements. The abstract expressionist, Hans Hoffman, called these tensions "push-pull." This painting and the others in my "Visual Cadence" series express a rhythmic repetition of colors that push and pull together to create a visual composition of sound.
