Enso is a Japanese word meaning "circle". It symbolizes the Absolute, enlightenment, strength, elegance, the Universe, and the void. Zen Buddhists believe that only a person who is mentally and spiritually complete can draw a true ensō. As an "expression of the moment" it is considered a form of minimalist expressionist art.

Julie Niemela, a Washington D.C. native, is a self-taught artist with a passion for photography and abstract painting. She is best known for her zen circle (enso) paintings. She has sold her work to collectors in the USA, Canada, Germany, Belgium, South Korea, and the UK.
